Course Description
In this course we will learn about the fundamentals of a car powertrain. We will go through the operation principles of the powertrain, how the different components are designed and how they work together to achieve the different requirements of different cars.
First, we will talk about the internal combustion engine, its main components, its mechanics, turbo chargers, superchargers, the pros and cons of each, the cooling circuit of an internal combustion engine, and how the engine is packaged in the chassis.
Second, we will explain how the electric motor works, its operation principle, its topologies, its main components, how losses are generated in the electric motor, cooling, and packaging.
Then, the concept of energy will be introduced, the different energy sources for automotive applications, energy flow for different powertrain types, energy losses, and how efficiency and performance for different powertrains are calculated and how they can be optimized.
Later, we will show how the transmission operates, the different gear types, what the different components are and how they function to deliver the requirements of the transmission.
Lastly, we will see how the hybrid powertrains were born, the different layouts they can have, and the pros and cons of each. Also we will explain how the packaging of each layout looks like.
