Introduction to Psychedelics, Dive into the fascinating world of psychedelics, exploring their traditional Indigenous use and therapeutic applications.
Course Description
In this introductory course, you’ll gain an understanding of the various psychedelic medicines and how they can be used to treat conditions like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance use disorders, and others. Since the 1950s, there have been hundreds of studies conducted demonstrating the efficacy of this new therapeutic modality. The American FDA will likely be approving one psychedelic medicine to treat PTSD in 2024 with other psychedelic medicines already approved to prescribe for depression.
This course invites you to explore the world of psychedelics, their effects, their harm potential, and their potential as therapeutic tools. We will embark on a journey through time, exploring the impact of The Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in Canada and The Controlled Substances Act in the United States on psychedelic research and drug policy. This program will also explore the nuances of cultural safety and humility within the context of psychedelic-assisted therapy, recognizing the significance of inclusive and respectful practices. We will look at some of the key studies which underscore the effectiveness of this therapeutic modality as well as learning about how psychedelics actually work in the brain. Finally, we will learn about what it takes to become a health professional working in psychedelic-assisted therapy if this is a career path you want to explore after taking the course.
