OT’s Role in Gender-Affirming Care for TGD Individuals, gender expansiveness, healthcare.
Course Description
This course is aimed at helping healthcare practitioners, including occupational therapists, feel more comfortable and competent in providing holistic, culturally responsive care for trans and gender-diverse people. As someone who is passionate about this topic, I’ve experienced some difficulties with locating resources related to gender-affirming care and rehabilitative and occupational science. Therefore, I created this course as part of my capstone to add to the literature on this topic and hopefully provide others with a resource to better serve this population in healthcare settings.
In this course, you will learn about gender expansiveness, explore client-centered and strengths-based approaches to care, learn how to advocate for trans and gender-diverse individuals in healthcare settings, discover the benefits of gender-affirming treatments and procedures, and finally learn the role of the rehabilitation specialist when regarding gender-affirming surgeries.
Each module is separated into several sections, which gives the learner an opportunity to chunk their learning and navigate the course at their own pace. There are also a few learning activities included with the material so the learner may begin to apply what they’ve learned to more concrete examples of possible scenarios and specific treatment strategies.
This course is a great opportunity for any healthcare practitioners or individuals who would like to learn more about gender expansiveness in the context of healthcare settings.
